Professor David B. James was born in New York City in 1956 and acquired an interest in martial arts at a young age. After a period of informal practice, he began training in Goju Ryu Karate and earned a black belt under Professor Rico Guy.
In the 1970's, his attention shifted to more practical forms of self-defense. He began studying the Vee Jitsu Ryu system under Shihan Lou Ferrer in Brooklyn, NY.
Later, David James had the opportunity to learn and train directly under the founder of the system, whereupon he became the protege of Professor Vee, from whom he inherited his present position as Chief Instructor.
In his 27 years experience, Professor James has taught a variety of law-enforcement and corrections professionals and has added to many other systems by welcoming their head instructors for defensive skills enhancement.
Professor James, who in 1993 was voted "Instructor of the Year" and inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, believes that Vee Arnis Jitsu is one of the few martial arts that does not live in the past.
"It offers more than most fighting systems", says Professor James, "because it is practical in real-life situations, quick to learn, and easy to apply."
Professor James would like to change the general perception of martial arts from a kid's fantasy to a practical form of self-protection for everyone. "If I had my way, Vee Arnis Jitsu would become a household name, and everyone would know this awesome system of self-defense!"
Shihan Cirilo was born in Panama on November 22nd of 1952. Shihan developed an interest in martial arts at an early age. Being a boy scout always kept Shihan Cirilo doing something physical, whether it was practicing boxing, Judo or playing his instruments after Sunday school.
In 1967 Shihan Cirilo immigrated to America with his parents at the age of 14 1/2 that is when he enrolled in Samuel J Tilden High School. It wasnt long until Shihan got back into the martial arts; he began practicing Kenpo Karate at a night center and began noticing his development in 1971. That is when Shihan first met his Brazilian instructor Rocky De Olivero and earned his Senior Black Belt in Shoran Ryun & Judo.
One Friday afternoon Shihan Cirilo received a devastating phone call from security that his instructor passed away on the mat floor while practicing, as this was a rare occasion that Shihan wasnt able to attend practice due to work. That same night Shihan went to the Dojo to set up the work out area to get ready for class, with the lights off Shihan sat there meditating searching for guidance. When students began arriving for class, Shihan lined everyone up and informed them of the tragedy that had happened that day. That day Shihan and the students did the class in the instructors name; it was very emotional for everyone. Because of Shihan's dedication to the arts and the trust that the upper belts had in him Shihan became the head instructor.
Everything I learned in Shorin Ryu & Judo from my instructor Rocky served me well but I went out to search for more knowledge. That is when Shihan Cirilo began practicing Patient Tachi at the school of Kanto in Sheepshead Bay under a great and very powerful instructor Sifo Phillips. Shihan Cirilo got his 3rd degree black belt in this system. Following this Shihan enrolled at the school of Aikikai in New York City to study Aikido for 2 years. Shihan got to teach Aikido along side with his students at United Nations as this was great honor for Shihan Cirilo.
After a long journey of training Shihan got his first tastes of Jujitsu when he began practicing Vee Jitsu Te under Sensei Rudy at the St. John Recreation Center. After some time Shihan began teaching at St. John Recreation Center under a personal request of Sensei Rudy. One Sunday afternoon after class Sensei Rudy gathered all the black belts and informed them that they would get the honor to train with the old man himself, referring to Professor Vee. That was the first time Shihan Cirilo got to meet professor Vee and began visiting him to train for years to come. But still something was missing for Shihan, and that is when he met Professor Shihan David James at his school Vee Arnis Jitsu in Downtown Brooklyn. To his surprise he found out that Shihan David James was a part of the Vee family. Professor David James welcomed me with helping arms. After about a year Shihan Cirilo earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in the VAJ system.
I helped the other students with their Judo & throwing skills, I also got very good with the Arnis Sticks. Over the years our school has been very good at Stick Fighting earning our Black Belt students many Grand Championships in competitions.
At this point in my life I am a Shihan in the Vee Arnis Jitsu System and have been with Professor James for over 20 years. I hope one day to be like him. His dedication and commitment to Professor Vee and the VAJ system is unquestionable. Professor David James promised Professor Vee that he would make his name a household one and I promised professor Vee to help Professor David James to achieve that goal, as we are on that mission with great success.
Vee Arnis Jitsu is a complete Self defense system and there is no question about the fact that Professor Vee put his system in the right hands when he chose Grand Master David James to spread the name and knowledge of VAJ and his goals. May the Lord bless Professor David James heart and guide him to achieve his goals.

Wess Anderson a native of Brooklyn, New York first developed an interest in Martial Arts at the age of 44. A co-worker took him to the Brownsville Bays Club; there he was introduced to Sensei George Young. At the Brownsville Bays Club Shihan Wes practiced Shotokan Karate , “ I didn’t stay too long due to the fact that I was playing drums in a Jazz group and the knuckle push ups along with sitting in sayzar position was too much” says Shihan Wes.
After about a year Shihan Wess still felt an urge to find something in martial Arts that would be more suitable to him. It was then when Shihan Wess discovered the S.A.F.E system in NYC which was ran by two female Black Belts from “Seido” karate Pam McDonnell and Tamara focusing on Self Defense. This was a great system says Shihan Wess, and they took him to many Self Defense seminars.
“I was nearly 47 at this time, and on one Saturday afternoon Pam and Tamara invited a few Ju-Jitsu instructors from various schools to show off their skills. I like it and decided to join the MIO Ju-Jitsu School, since S.A.F.E had to relocate due to financial issues.” Shihan continued his studies under Sensei Carl Daniels a Queens correction officer as well as studies in Shoto Kan under a family friend Sensei Don Braithwaite.
Shihan Wess became a member of the VAJ system in late fall of 1985. “Shihan David James encouraged me and said ‘You’re not too old at 49 to practice VAJ’. He was a very humble and gracious man. I was hooked on the great training that Shihan David presented. When professor Vee came in one week, it was the greatest moment of my life. VAJ has enriched my life beyond expectations, with respect for others, knowledge, judgment and physical exercise for a long life.”
“Thank You Professor James.”
Ken Joseph was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1971 and expressed an interest in physical fitness and martial arts at an early age. In the 1990s, Ken developed a love for weight training which prompted him to become an avid gym member. T o add to his fitness/athletic skills Ken turned his attention towards Martial Arts.
After an extensive exploration of different martial art disciplines, Ken decided that his real interest was in reality based self defense, so he discovered various systems, seeking the most effective form of urban self protection. In 2005 Ken had the good fortune of meeting Professor James and became a proud member of the Vee Arnis Jitsu family.
In 2009 Ken received his black belt (VEE ARNIS JITSU, NYC, #101), and under the guidance of Professor James Ken continues to learn, and share the street self protection principles and concepts that the Vee Arnis Jitsu system is known for.
In an effort to expand the system, Ken has become dedicated to developing the VAJ fitness brand, which focuses on functional, high intensity fitness for people of all ages. Ken is a certified Kettlebell instructor (Kettlebell Concepts, 2010), as well as a Muay Thai cardio kickboxing instructor. Ken is totally committed to Professor James’ vision for the promotion and expansion of the Vee Arnis Jitsu product. In his own words Ken says: “I am honored to continue the crusade of sharing this awesome treasure that is Vee Arnis Jitsu”.
Trevor Burrowes was born in St. Michael, Barbados, in the West Indies. Martial arts movies were big in Barbados at the time, as Trevor and his brothers would go to watch the double-features films, return home and practice what they saw. That is when Trevor first developed an interest in Martial arts at the age of about 7.
Most of the martial arts films shown at the time were from China, and centered on Kung Fu. This was particularly the case with the Bruce Lee genre. Trevor and his brothers experimented many different techniques from nun chucks to round kicks to high-flying kicks, they did it all. Being the youngest of the brothers it didnt fare too well against Trevor; it afforded him the opportunity to learn from his siblings.
Prior to discovering the Vee Arnis Jitsu system Trevors martial arts training was not formal it mostly consisted of imitating the moves he had seen at the movie theater, anything that looked good, he used without regard to styles. Upon reflection, this was fortunate as it freed Trevor and his brothers from much of the rigidity inherent in other disciplines. Trevors second oldest brother was a natural. Never formally training, he nevertheless competed and won against formally trained opponents. As teenagers, long after Trevor and his family had emigrated to the U.S. he continued studying martial arts, still self-taught earning himself victorious battles and teaching classes including Black-Belt master classes at Boston College.
Trevor joined the Vee Arnis Jitsu system in October of 1997 and received his first black belt in 2002 following by an Instructors belt in 2004 and his 5th degree the Bumblebee belt in 2009.
In his own words Trevor says that "the VAJ System is for me a Godsend. My father being a former champion boxer and Barbados military officer, had always stressed that no such thing existed as a fair fight. A fight is a fight, he would say. Anything you could pick up and use, anything you could do to your advantage, you use it, and you do it. It was a concept I saw him put into practice again and again. Another important lesson he instinctively taught us was the VAJ concept of the dead hand, or two dead hands. Whether it was in sport or in play-combat with us, he sought openings, entries, seldom addressing the hands except maybe to trap them and expose other openings.
The VAJ system greatly expands on the concepts my father first taught my brothers and me when we were younger. It is to date the most practical, reality-based system of personal protection I have seen. While many other systems of personal protection depend on the implicit cooperation of ones opponent to be effective (an absolutely useless strategy against street-sponsored violence), the VAJ system utilizes various principles centered on distance, motion, explosiveness and control to address and neutralize threats to ones safety. Most importantly the concepts learned and practiced on the mat can be immediately implemented successfully once he/she leaves the floor dispelling the myth of many years of archaic training before one is able to successfully defend oneself."
